How it works: The Elements of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy combines solution-focused talking therapy and guided meditation (hypnosis) to help you meet your goals, develop your self-esteem and address your challenges at your own pace.
The solution-focused approach means there is no obligation to talk about the past with me; we will be future and goal oriented. This means that, instead of revisiting painful, triggering or craving-inducing thoughts, we can focus on how to cope with the impacts of what is happening and meet our goals.
Hypnosis
Hypnotherapy uses guided mediation to achieve a "trance". This calms the brain to the point where we can process things which otherwise triggers our fight or flight response, causing anxiety, dependency or stagnation
Trance is a natural state of mind which we unknowingly enter multiple times a day. Hypnotherapy artificially induces this state in order to replicate REM - our brain's inbuilt way of processing thoughts.
Trance is where the conscious and the subconscious can meet and allow a space to be focused, creative and relaxing. In hypnotherapy we use this space to process thoughts, find goals and map a way towards them, and visualize helpful first steps.
Mental rehearsal, and solution-focused thinking in trance helps to begin the sparks needed to form new neural pathways, and acts as the first step to achieving long lasting change.
Solution-Focused
Solution-focused approaches believe the clients have the tools to succeed and overcome obstacles.
This does not mean to say we ignore the problem; far from it. We confront it with solutions, with the belief tht, eventually, the tools in your arsenal will be enough to overcome it.
Stress Reduction
We work on ensuring that you are managing your stress levels, establishing coping mechanisms and getting healthy sleep.
The brain's natural way of dealing with stress is through Rapid Eye Movement (REM). The good news: hypnosis replicates REM. Trance work is used in conjunction with talking therapy to combat stress and build resilience.
Challenging your challenging thoughts
You read that right! I take elements from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to talk through your challenging thoughts, and discuss them objectively.
Once a thought, behavior pattern or belief is challenged, it becomes easier to find exceptions to it, and to find paths forward
Mindfulness
We have actual, real stress, and we have imagined stress - the rumination that amplifies the actual stress.
Grounding ourselves in the moment can be tricky, especially if we have a lot going on. However, using mindfulness techniques we can learn to sit with ourselves in the present. From there, we can listen to ourselves, what we need, and come up with solutions.
Mindfulness has been found to improve moods, awareness in the body and reduce anxiety and burnout
